Port Southern Teaches Kids About Business and About Southern Hospitality
High Point, N.C., January, 13- High Point University students Steven Beck and Jeremy Hiatt spoke to middle school students from Westchester Country Day School on Wednesday of last week.
The investment club, built of 20 middle school students from Westchester, invited the Port Southern Clothing Company to speak to them about the fundamentals of business. While speaking to the students, the Port Southern owners took advantage of the opportunity and also taught the group how to convey Southern hospitality.
Because Port Southern is founded around the slogan of “Fine Clothing With Southern Hospitality”, part of Port Southern’s mission is to spread Southern hospitality in many different forms. In order for this mission to be effective, the owners believe that they must first acquire followers who share the same passion for the South and the hospitality it is known for. “We hope that these young students look up to us, and that we can be a role model to them through Port Southern,” said Beck.
The owners of Port Southern hope to continue to make appearances throughout the area speaking to local groups about their fine clothing, but also speaking to them about the Southern hospitality they are so fond of.

Students design 'fine clothing with Southern hospitality'
When Nicholas Ruden, Steven Beck, and Jeremy Hiatt entered High Point University, accompanied by friend Zachary Moore of East Carolina University, they never thought they would be departing with a fulfilled dream of creating their own clothing line, Port Southern.
The line began on September 1, 2008 when the four friends came together with an instinctual idea, keeping in mind the three important ideals of a desire to better their community, pride for the South and their hometown, and the hope of creating an elite clothing line of high-quality men's essentials.
Before these men began creating Port Southern Clothing, they led everyday college lives just like the rest of us. Each of them seemed to already have a feel of what it would be like to hold a position of authority. Steven Beck was a student assistant for the men's basketball team. He began his freshman year and continued to work with them until late 2008. Nick Ruden was head of the College Republicans group at High Point University and spent most of his time working with politics. Jeremy Hiatt had high hopes of becoming an accountant; as one of the heads of the Business Interest club, he was well on his way. Last but not least, Zachary Moore was a club hockey player for East Carolina.
As roommates, Steven and Nick shared a common bond to start working together on this business venture; being good friends with Zachary, he was in for the ride and not to mention the team's new accountant.Port Southern's slogan is "Fine Clothing with Southern Hospitality." In order to create the fine clothing with the southern hospitality nestled inside, a long manufacturing process needs to take place. HPU Students Launch 'Port Southern' Clothing Company
HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 12, 2009 – High Point University students Nick Ruden, Jeremy Hiatt and Steven Beck, along with friend Zachary Moore, officially kicked off the start of their new clothing company, Port Southern, in high style with a launch party and presentation on the HPU campus.
The event, held Nov. 10 in the Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce ballroom, featured items from the new company - including private label hats and men’s polo shirts.
The four friends began the company on Sept. 1, 2008, when the group was looking for a way to show pride for the South, as well as help the community in some way. Also, they were hoping to create a finer clothing company after they grew tired of coming across a great deal of low-quality clothing.

Young start-up: College students create clothing company
HIGH POINT – If you think that balancing a full-time college workload and numerous campus activities can be time consuming, try launching a new business on top of it all. That’s what four students at High Point University are doing with a new clothing company they’ve created called Port Southern LLC.
“I’ve always wanted to be part of a clothing company,” said Steven Beck, a junior at the university and president of the company. “Once this idea began, it just hasn’t stopped.”
As a college student, Beck decided he was tired of buying the low-quality clothing typically designed for his age group.
Two of his friends, Zach Moore and Nick Ruden, both seniors at the university, agreed with Beck and joined in on the idea one year ago. The trio began to organize the company shortly thereafter. Jeremy Hiatt, a senior and accounting major, joined in the summer to handle the company’s accounts.
